Investigación sobre células madre

Cada año durante los últimos cuatro, el grupo de médicos e investigadores en la Clínica Regenexx en Colorado (USA) recopilan una lista de las investigaciones publicadas sobre células madre de médula ósea en el ámbito de la ortopedia y traumatología.

Vemos también, cada vez, más estudios de alta calidad que se publican sobre el tratamiento de la artrosis de rodilla. Por una parte, hay más ensayos controlados aleatorios y con grupos de control. Pero por otra parte, el número total de pacientes en estos estudios sigue siendo pequeño, entre 25-50 pacientes. Sin embargo, el número total de pacientes (pacientes acumulados en todos los estudios) alcanza actualmente una cifra superior a los 8.500 pacientes, lo cual es una cifra muy importante frente a los que siguen diciendo que disponemos de poca investigación sobre el uso de células madre de médula ósea en ortopedia.

Mientras que algunos afirman que la investigación clínica en el uso de células madre en ortopedia y traumatología está en su infancia, este cuerpo de evidencia está llegando más bien a la adolescencia tardía.

Lo interesante es que más allá de los estudios de Regenexx y de algunos pequeños estudios de universidades estadounidenses, España ha estado dominando la investigación de células madre de médula ósea expandida en cultivo en ortopedia y traumatología.

Otro aspecto igualmente interesante en estos dos últimos años es ver el crecimiento en el uso de otros tipos de células madre en ortopedia y traumatología. En particular, el uso de células madre derivadas de la grasa. Mientras que el año pasado no hubo suficiente para incluir para hacer un ir de ella, en los últimos dos años, hay suficiente para justificar la inclusión.
